Who this trial is looking for

This trial is looking for people living with HIV and healthy controls to help researchers understand how HIV affects the immune system. Participants will provide blood and lymph node samples, and may undergo a second biopsy later. Those with HIV will need to stop certain medications before the biopsy.

You may be able to join if

  • I am at least 18 years old.
  • I have a documented HIV infection.
  • I can give informed, written consent.
  • I have a lymph node that can be easily accessed.
  • I have specific blood test results that meet the study requirements.
  • I am willing to allow my blood to be used for future studies.

You may not be able to join if

  • I am pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • I currently abuse alcohol or drugs.
  • I have AIDS dementia or certain AIDS-related cancers.
  • I have taken aspirin or certain anti-inflammatory medications in the last 7 days.
  • I have a medical condition that makes the biopsy unsafe.
  • I have used narcotics or cocaine less than a week before the biopsy.

About This Trial
This is a study to determine the effect of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on lymphoid tissues (e.g., lymph nodes) as compared to peripheral white blood cells. We have shown in previous studies that the lymph node is a major site of accumulation of HIV in the body, as well as being a site where much of the viral replication occurs which leads to the destruction of the body's immune system. …
