Who this trial is looking for
This trial is looking for smokers who have early COPD, as well as smokers without COPD. Participants will help researchers understand the bacteria in the lungs and how they relate to the disease.
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
You may be able to join if
- I am a smoker with at least 20 pack-years.
- I have airflow obstruction with specific lung function numbers.
- I have FEV1 greater than 50% predicted.
You may not be able to join if
- I have FEV1 less than 50%.
- I have had significant heart disease.
- I have diabetes.
- I have serious liver or kidney disease.
- I have severe bleeding problems.
- I am pregnant.
- I drink more than 6 beers or 4 mixed drinks daily.
- I cannot provide informed consent.

This is a cross sectional case controlled study to assess lung microbiome and inflammation in smokers with and without Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria:
* Case definition: Smokers (\>20 pack-year) with airflow obstruction (FEV1/FVC\<70) and FEV1\>50% predicted (early COPD GOLD 1 or 2)
* Control definition: Smokers with normal spirometry will serve as controls.
