This trial is looking for people with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) who are being referred for specific heart surgeries. Participants will help develop better ways to match patients with the right treatments for AF.
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
You may be able to join if
- I have persistent atrial fibrillation that requires treatment.
- I have tried at least one anti-arrhythmic drug without success.
- I am being referred for ablation or Maze surgery.
You may not be able to join if
- I have active coronary ischemia or decompensated heart failure.
- I have an atrial or ventricular clot.
- I am pregnant.
- I cannot or do not want to provide informed consent.
- I have rheumatic valve disease.
- I have a thrombotic disease or use venous filters.
- I have had prior chest surgery.

About This Trial
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an enormous public health problem in the United States, affecting 2-5 million Americans and causing rapid heart beats, stroke, heart failure or death. In this project, the applicant will develop a novel framework to better understand human AF that builds on agreement between several concepts for the disease. Inclusion Criteria:
* referred for ablation or Maze surgery at Stanford Medicine for persistent AF (i.e. which requires cardioversion to terminate and/or lasts \>7 days)
