Who this trial is looking for

This trial is looking for adults who have orthopedic surgery planned and have a history of tobacco use or breathing problems. Participants will do breathing exercises before surgery to see if it helps them recover better.

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

You may be able to join if

  • I am 18 years old or older.
  • I have a history of tobacco use.
  • I have breathing problems or a lung disease.
  • I have shortness of breath with mild activity.
  • My surgery will take longer than 30 minutes.
  • I can follow instructions for exercises.
  • I can communicate any pain or fatigue.

You may not be able to join if

  • I have a serious health issue classified as level 4 or higher.
  • I had pneumonia or a severe lung infection in the last two weeks.
  • I need continuous oxygen support.
  • I use breathing assistance while awake.
  • I have a neurologic condition like MS or Parkinson's.
  • I am in a pulmonary rehab program.
  • I have severe lung disease.
  • I have an infectious disease that requires isolation.

About This Trial

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate effects of respiratory strengthening exercises on breathing function, in people who have orthopedic surgery. It is known that breathing function decreases for a few days after surgery. in In this study, we want to see if exercising before surgery strengthens the breathing muscles and improves recovery after surgery.
