This trial is looking for children under 5 years old who have severe malaria and low platelet counts. Participants will receive whole blood transfusions to see if it helps them survive better.
You may be able to join if
- I am under 5 years old
- My platelet count is 75,000 or less
- My hemoglobin is between 5 and 9 g/dL
- I have a specific kind of malaria with at least 500 parasites in my blood
- I have severe malaria as defined by health authorities
- My guardian agrees to follow the study rules during the trial
- I live in the area where the clinic is located
- My parent or guardian has signed the consent form
You may not be able to join if
- I live in foster care or under government supervision
- I live outside the hospital's area or plan to move away
- I have any other condition that could make my situation unsafe
- I cannot safely receive a whole blood transfusion
