Inclusion Criteria:
For patients with major depressive disorder:
* diagnosis of major depressive disorder according to DSM-5
* free of antidepressant medication
For healthy participants:
* C-reactive protein (CRP): ≤ 1 mg/l
* free of antidepressant medication
