Who this trial is looking for
This trial is looking for adults aged 40 to 60 to understand how the brain reacts to salt in the blood. Participants will undergo an MRI while receiving a salt solution and follow a special diet for a week.
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
You may be able to join if
- I am between 40 and 60 years old.
- My blood pressure is between 100/60 mmHg and 140/90 mmHg.
- My BMI is between 18.5 and 35 kg/m2.
- My serum potassium level is between 3.5 and 5.5 mmol/L.
- I do not have a history of cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, or neurological disease.
You may not be able to join if
- I am under 40 or over 60 years old.
- My blood pressure is below 100/60 mmHg or above 140/90 mmHg.
- My BMI is below 18.5 kg/m2 or above 30 kg/m2.
- My serum potassium level is below 3.5 mmol/L or above 5.5 mmol/L.
- I have an abnormal ECG.
- I have any history of cardiovascular, cancer, metabolic, respiratory, or renal disease.
- I am currently using tobacco or nicotine.
- I have claustrophobia.

About This Trial
The overall objective of this project is to identify the key salt-sensing regions of the brain and determine the underlying mechanism of sodium sensing. The investigators will assess how the brain responds to an acute increase of salt in the blood using MRI. This will be done during a 30-minute infusion of a saline solution containing 3% salt. * Age: \> 40 years or \< 60 years
* Blood pressure: \> 100/60 mmHg or \< 140/90 mmHg
* BMI: \> 18.5 kg/m2 or \< 35 kg/m2
* Serum potassium: \> 3.5 mmol/L or \< 5.5 mmol/L
