This trial is looking for adults who need heart surgery but have not had atrial fibrillation or flutter. Participants will receive a specific surgical procedure called posterior pericardiotomy during their surgery.

You may be able to join if

  • I am 18 years of age or older
  • I need surgery on my aorta, heart valves, or coronary arteries
  • I can give my consent to join the trial

You may not be able to join if

  • I have a history of atrial fibrillation or flutter
  • My heart surgery is for a reason not included in this trial
  • I have had previous heart surgery that opened my pericardium
  • I have had surgery in my left pleural cavity before
  • I am having minimally invasive heart surgery

PRINCE is an international, multicentre, randomized controlled trial of posterior pericardiotomy in patients without a history of atrial fibrillation (AF) or flutter undergoing cardiac surgery.
