Blood platelets, well known for their role in hemostasis, are abnormally activated in patients suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but also from other immunomediated diseases (scleroderma, vasculitis, myositis, Gougerot-Sjögren's and rheumatoid arthritis) in cases of high disease activity.
