Who this trial is looking for

This trial is looking for adults with Crohn's disease who still have stomach symptoms like pain or bloating even when their disease is stable. Participants will take a medication called amitriptyline to see if it helps relieve these symptoms.

Must not be taking Tricyclic antidepressantsMonoamine oxidase inhibitorsCisapride
Rules you out Active Crohn's diseaseMajor depressive disorder

You may be able to join if

  • I am between 18 and 65 years old.
  • I have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease.
  • My Crohn's disease has been stable for at least 3 months.
  • I have stomach symptoms like pain at least 3 days a month.
  • I have been on stable medication for Crohn's disease for at least 90 days.
  • I am willing to follow a medication schedule for amitriptyline.

You may not be able to join if

  • I have active Crohn's disease or signs of a flare-up.
  • I have had a psychiatric hospitalization in the last year.
  • I am currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • I have had a heart problem in the last 3 months.
  • I have an active major depressive disorder.
  • I have a history of severe psychiatric conditions.
  • I have had a recent change in Crohn's disease medication.
  • I have an intestinal complication or surgery that affects my condition.

About This Trial
Many individuals with Crohn's disease continue to experience abdominal pain, bloating, or bowel habit changes even when their inflammation is controlled. Amitriptyline is a medication commonly used at low doses to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and abdominal pain.
