Who this trial is looking for

This trial is looking for stroke patients with weakened arm function. Participants will receive brain stimulation and electrical stimulation to help improve hand control.

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

You may be able to join if

  • I am 21 years or older.
  • I had my first stroke at least 6 months ago.
  • I can follow simple commands and remember some information.
  • I can fully bend and straighten my other arm.
  • I can sit up without help.
  • I have some hand movement and can open my fingers.
  • I can sit without pain for the study duration.
  • I have no major skin issues on my arm or hand.

You may not be able to join if

  • I have another serious nerve or brain condition.
  • I have uncontrolled seizures.
  • I have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device.
  • I am pregnant.
  • I received Botox in my arm muscles in the last 3 months.
  • I cannot feel my arm or hand.
  • I have severe pain that stops me from moving my hand.
  • I have a metal implant in my head.

About This Trial

This pilot study for stroke patients with chronic upper limb hemiplegia will examine the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on hand motor control and corticospinal excitability. Specifically, this study will investigate the effects of timing and delivery of tDCS in conjunction with contralaterally controlled functional electrical stimulation.

Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria: 1. Age ≥ 21 2. ≥ 6 months since first clinical hemorrhagic or nonhemorrhagic stroke 3. Able to follow 3-stage commands and remember 2 of 3 items after 30 minutes 4.
