Multiple Sclerosis clinical trials in Pennsylvania: what to expect

Multiple sclerosis trials divide into relapsing and progressive forms. Relapsing MS studies test new oral and infused disease-modifying therapies, usually against an approved medicine rather than a placebo. Progressive MS has fewer approved options, so trials there test drugs meant to slow disability, protect nerves or repair myelin, and often do use a placebo. Alongside these are trials of rehabilitation, exercise, diet, fatigue and bladder treatments, and studies that simply follow people over time with MRI and blood tests.

In Pennsylvania, recruiting multiple sclerosis studies are concentrated in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Abington and Bethlehem. 4 of the 9 are run by a drug or device company, which usually means a larger study with travel reimbursement; the rest are academic or hospital-led.

Who multiple sclerosis trials usually look for

Listings state the type of MS, an age range (commonly 18 to 55 for relapsing trials, up to 65 for progressive) and a disability score range measured by the study neurologist. Relapsing trials usually want a relapse or new MRI activity in the past one to two years. Drug trials require a washout from your current therapy, which varies from weeks to months by drug and is managed by the site. Symptom and rehabilitation trials let you stay on your treatment.

What taking part involves

Screening includes a neurological exam, blood work and an MRI. Drug trials then run one to three years with visits every one to three months, an MRI every six to twelve months and a relapse assessment whenever symptoms change. Relapses are treated as normal. The study drug, scans and visits are free, and an extension usually lets everyone continue the active treatment afterwards. Rehabilitation trials involve sessions over eight to twenty-four weeks with walking, hand and cognition tests.

Questions worth asking the study team

What the comparison treatment is; how the washout from your current therapy is handled and how long it lasts; how many MRIs are needed; whether there is an extension; and what happens if you relapse during the study.

PHASE2 Birmingham, Alabama +4 sites NCT06782490
This trial is looking for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who experience muscle stiffness for at least 6 months. Participants will help evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a new treatment.
Recruiting
Central Vein Sign in Multiple Sclerosis Extension Study
NA Philadelphia, Pennsylvania +2 sites NCT07424027
This trial is looking for people who are already part of the CAVS-MS study and have completed their 24-month visits. Participants will be followed for 48 months to see how two specific MRI markers help in diagnosing and monitoring multiple sclerosis.
Recruiting
A Study Evaluating the Real World Experience of Participants Treated With BRIUMVI® (Ublituximab-xiiy) for Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis (RMS)
N/A Birmingham, Alabama +4 sites NCT06433752
This trial is looking for people with a confirmed diagnosis of relapsing multiple sclerosis who are starting treatment with BRIUMVI®. Participants will receive the medication and share their experiences and results during the study.
Recruiting
Genes and Environment in Multiple Sclerosis
N/A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania +4 sites NCT01353547
This trial is looking for people who might be at risk for multiple sclerosis due to genetics or other factors. Participants will help researchers understand these risks better, which could lead to ways to prevent or treat the disease.
Recruiting
Prospective Investigation of Multiple Sclerosis in the Three Rivers Region
N/A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania NCT02994121
This trial is looking for people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, as well as healthy individuals, to help researchers understand how the disease affects people differently. Participants will be observed over a long period of time, up to 30 years.
Recruiting
Best Available Therapy Versus Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant for Multiple Sclerosis (BEAT-MS)
PHASE3 Palo Alto, California +4 sites NCT04047628
This trial is looking for adults with treatment-resistant multiple sclerosis. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either stem cell transplantation or the best available therapy and will be followed for 6 years.
Recruiting
RE104 Safety and Efficacy Study in Adjustment Disorder in Cancer and Other Medical Illnesses
PHASE2 Birmingham, Alabama +4 sites NCT07002034
This trial is looking for people who have been diagnosed with Adjustment Disorder due to cancer or certain other health conditions. Participants will receive a single dose of the study drug to see if it helps reduce their depressive or anxiety symptoms.
Recruiting
Testing an Immunotherapy Anti-cancer Drug, Nivolumab, for Advanced Cancers in Patients With Autoimmune Disorders, AIM-NIVO
PHASE1 Birmingham, Alabama +4 sites NCT03816345
This trial is looking for adults with advanced cancers who also have autoimmune disorders. Participants will receive treatments that may include the drug nivolumab and possibly others to see how well they work together.

Multiple Sclerosis clinical trials in Pennsylvania: common questions

How many Multiple Sclerosis clinical trials are recruiting in Pennsylvania?
TrialFinder currently lists 9 recruiting Multiple Sclerosis clinical trials with study sites in Pennsylvania. Results are updated regularly from ClinicalTrials.gov, the official U.S. registry of clinical studies.
Where are Multiple Sclerosis clinical trials located in Pennsylvania?
Study sites for the Multiple Sclerosis trials listed on this page include Philadelphia, Pittsburgh. Each trial page lists every participating site with contact details, so you can find the location closest to you.
Do I need insurance to join a Multiple Sclerosis clinical trial in Pennsylvania?
No. Study-related care is covered by the trial sponsor at no cost to participants, including the study treatment, required lab tests and study visits. Many Multiple Sclerosis trials in Pennsylvania also compensate participants for time and travel. Health insurance is not required to search or enroll.
How do I qualify for a Multiple Sclerosis clinical trial in Pennsylvania?
Each study sets its own criteria based on age, Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis details, prior treatments, current medications and general health. The fastest way to find out is to contact a research site directly — most will pre-screen you by phone in 10 to 15 minutes at no charge. You can also create a free TrialFinder profile to be matched automatically.
Will I get a placebo instead of MS treatment?
In relapsing MS almost never: trials compare the new drug with an approved medicine, so everyone is treated. Progressive MS trials more often use a placebo because fewer approved treatments exist, and an extension usually follows.
Do I need to stop my current MS medicine to join?
For a drug trial, yes, after a washout that depends on your current medicine and is supervised by the study neurologist. Trials of rehabilitation, diet or symptom treatments let you continue it.
What is an EDSS score?
The Expanded Disability Status Scale, a 0 to 10 score a neurologist assigns from an exam, mostly based on walking. Trials set a range, and the study neurologist scores you at screening; you do not need to know it in advance.
